Idaho Massacre Police Files Released

If you’re on the internet at all, you’ve probably seen a video or read an article about the “Idaho Four,” the name given to the group of college students who were murdered in their off-campus housing on November 13th, 2022 — the suspect, Bryan Kohberger, was arrested by police on December, 30th of the same year. Bryan was in Allbrightsville, Pennsylvania, when he was taken into custody. Stone-faced, Bryan has puzzled law enforcement since they first clicked the cuffs onto his wrists. Lending even more to the mystery, when Bryan was taken to Idaho on January 4th, 2023, the judge overseeing his case issued a gag order, which prohibited officials and others involved in the case from speaking about it.

On January 5th, 2023, court documents were released — an affidavit in the case against Kohberger. Among the findings included:

  • A witness claims she saw a figure of a 5’10” or taller man, ‘not very muscular,’ dressed in black clothing and a mask on the night of the murders. She said that the masked figure walked toward the sliding glass door, and she locked herself in her room.
  • The DNA found on the button snap of the knife sheath that was left behind at the crime scene appears to be a strong match with the DNA found in the trash at the Kohberger family residence in Pennsylvania.
  • Investigators believe that the homicides occurred between 4 a.m. and 4:25 a.m.
  • Kohberger applied for an internship with the Pullman Police Department, and in his application essay, he said he had an interest in assisting in rural law enforcement agencies with how to better collect and analyze technological data.
  • Investigators checked the movements of Kohberger’s phone and it stops reporting a signal at 2:47 a.m. and appears to turn back on at 4:48 a.m. This means the phone may have been in area without cell coverage or the phone was turned off.

Up until now, this was most of what was known — of course, speculation abounds on the internet and in hushed tones of conversation, but now, the police documents have been released after Bryan’s sentencing hearing which just took place this past week. (If you’re not up to date, Bryan plead guilty and was given four life sentences without the possibility of parole.)

In the weeks before Bryan Kohberger killed four University of Idaho students, there were strange happenings at their home.

  • One of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, told her roommate that she saw a man she didnt recognize staring at her when she took her dog outside.
  • The students came home one morning at 11 a.m. to find the door open, loose on its hinges.
  • From the case files, police report that they found a black glove at the scene outside — ‘I spoke to OFC Tesdahl for a moment and then began to walk back to my patrol vehicle. As I did so, I noticed a black glove laying in the parking lot approximately 25 feet from the front door. The glove was laying palm-up and appeared to have been laying in that spot for a couple of days as it did not have any snow on it. I nudged the glove with the toe of my boot and found it was frozen to the ground. I asked OFC Tesdahl for rubber gloves and his flashlight. Upon further examination, there appeared to be a dark, fluid like substance on the glove. This substance’s color and consistency was consistent with dried blood.’
  • Kohberger was known for his ‘strange and annoying habits’ in prison, like washing his hands dozens of times a day and taking 45 minute showers. One inmate even recalls a moment when Bryan lost his temper while he was video chatting with his mother — the inmate was watching sports and said ‘you suck’ referencing one of the players on the team, at which point Kohberger immediately got up and put his face to the bars and aggressively asked if the inmate was talking about him or his mother.

As of now, Bryan Kohberger has yet to reveal his motive for the killings — some believe that his refusal to do so is a way to keep his ‘power’ over the case. A way to keep his name in the headlines. Regardless of the reason, the Idaho State Massacre is one of the most brutal and heartbreaking cases we’ve covered here at the Evidence Room — stay tuned for part two, where we’ll go over more of the newly released police files and evidence including an interview with a woman who went on a date with Kohberger.
