Officer Involved Shooting – Jacorey Calhoun

Jacorey Calhoun, 23, was shot and killed by an Alameda County deputy that works alongside a police dog says John Burris, the attorney retained by the family to investigate the shooting. He said that Calhoun was ‘unarmed and was running away’ when he was shot.

Burris asked, ‘what was the imminent threat to himself or others that caused him to shoot? He (Calhoun) was not seen with a weapon. He did run from the police, but running from the police itself is not the basis to shoot someone.’

The deputy responsible for the shooting, Derek Thoms, was named in a lawsuit filed by Juventino Rodarte, who accused the deputy of unleashing his police dog in March of 2013 without any particular suspicion that criminal activity was occuring. The dog ‘mangled Rodarte’s left calf, thereby causing him to lose consciousness.‘
